Riddhima Kapoor Sparks Outrage for Classist Remarks on Social Media Trolls: A Closer Look at Privilege and Parenting in the Spotlight

Riddhima Kapoor, the elder daughter of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, faced backlash over her comments about social media trolls believed she had made in an interview. A video snippet of her interview to Galatta India in April 2024 went viral again, where she spoke about not wanting her daughter Samara on Instagram. “She (Samara) wants to be on social media, I don’t want her to be on social media… People will write all sorts of things. May be it is the house help commenting, who knows?”

This comment did not sit well with a number of people on social media, especially Reddit, where the video faced immediate backlash. Many called this comment classist. “You must be treating house helps as sub-humans; you just exposed yourself,”another person wrote, hitting the nail right on the head. It sparked an outrage because it pointed to the inherent class difference that we often ignore and refuse to acknowledge when it comes to discussions like these.

Many also noted that fact that Riddhima’s statement implied a derogatory view of house help and that it revealed a larger problem with how people from privileged backgrounds view people in service. “Everything she said made sense except calling house help,” wrote one user and added, “If only she realized how much class hierarchy is baked into her thinking.”

Some people were upset with how Riddhima manages her daughter’s social media and thought that a private account with fewer people allowed to see it would be a better idea. They believed that the interview could actually bring more unwanted attention to her daughter, Samara, which goes against Riddhima’s goal of keeping her away from online negativity.

Riddhima, a well-known jewelry designer, got married to businessman Bharat Sahni in 2006 and had their daughter in 2011. The discussion about her recent comments shows the difficulties of dealing with social media when you’re famous, especially in a society where differences in wealth and status are still a sensitive topic.
