Ranya Rao who recently went to jail for gold smuggling operates a firm that obtained substantial land through the Karnataka government during the early part of 2023. Her firm Ksiroda India Private Limited obtained 12 acres for a steel manufacturing unit at the Sira Industrial Area within Tumakuru district. Analysis shows the ₹138 crore investment project would produce work opportunities for almost 160 people. 
The government approved the land allocation through the 137th State Level Single Window Clearance Committee (SLSWCC) meeting on January 2, 2023 under the leadership of the previous BJP-led government. KIADB announced that the land allotment complied with regular procedures through their publish notification on February 22 of 2023. 
At Kempegowda International Airport on March 3, 2025, police arrested Ranya Rao for possessing gold bars valued at ₹12.56 crore. The total amount seized during the searches at her residence in Bengaluru included ₹2.06 crore worth of gold jewelry and ₹2.67 crore in cash which raised the grand total to ₹17.29 crore. Political discussions have emerged because the Congress administration started reviewing industrial licensing approvals from the prior government administration. The situation exposes major obstacles which enforcement agencies encounter when fighting advanced smuggling networks alongside maintaining reliable industrial development processes.
Public curiosity has reached new heights because Ranya Rao is connected to IPS officer Ramachandra Rao who functions currently as the chairman and managing director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. The investigation team continuously examines her business associations to find connections between influential people and the smuggling operation.
