On 15th February, 2025, we are commemorating Randhir Kapoor’s 78th birthday, one of the veterans of Indian cinema. As a member of the renowned Kapoor family, Randhir has enjoyed some of his best performances as an actor, director, and producer and left an irreproducible mark on Bollywood.
Early Life and Family Heritage
Born on 15th February 1947 at Chembur, Bombay (now Mumbai) to the illustrious Kapoor family. He is the eldest of the legendary director Raj Kapoor and the grandson of the legendary Prithviraj Kapoor. Grown up in a family so much dedicated to films, Randhir was made aware of the world of films at a young age. His brothers were late actors Rajiv Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor, and his family tradition continues through his daughters Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan, both famous actresses of Bollywood.

Entry into Cinema
Randhir’s introduction to cinema was early enough when he played a child artist in his father’s movie “Shree 420” (1955). Later, he was an assistant director in Lekh Tandon’s “Jhuk Gaya Aasman” (1968), gaining priceless experience off-camera. In 1971, Randhir made his debut as an actor and director in “Kal Aaj Aur Kal,” which featured three generations of the Kapoor family: his grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor, father Raj Kapoor, and himself. The film was a fair success and was his industry debut as a career.

Highlights of the Acting Career
In the 1970s and early 1980s, Randhir Kapoor was a well-known actor. He portrayed significant roles in films such as “Jeet” (1972), “Jawani Diwani” (1972), “Rampur Ka Lakshman” (1972), and “Hamrahi” (1974). His work on the big screen and versatility earned him a dedicated fan base. In his first film, “Kal Aaj Aur Kal,” the title number “Bhanware Ki Gunjan” proved to be quite successful, representing that he can connect with people. There is another chart-buster number “Ghum Hai Kisi Ke Pyar Mein” from “Rampur Ka Lakshman,” a classic one. Move on to Direction and Production
Randhir then moved into direction and production after a glittering acting career
He also produced and directed “Dharam Karam” (1975) and afterwards assumed responsibility for directing “Henna” (1991) following his father’s death, Raj Kapoor. “Henna,” featuring Pakistani actress Zeba Bakhtiar and Rishi Kapoor, was a border-hopping romance that earned top ratings and became India’s entry in the Best Foreign Language Film at the 64th Academy Awards. Besides direction, Randhir also worked on the production of films like “Prem Granth” (1996) and “Aa Ab Laut Chalen” (1999), and immersed himself deeply with RK Films, the family production house. Randhir wed actress Babita Shivdasani in 1971. The couple has two daughters, Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan, both of whom have enjoyed very successful Bollywood careers. Despite all the highs and lows that Randhir and Babita have faced in their marriage, including a breakup, they have remained good friends and good parents to their daughters.

Legacy and Recent Years
Randhir Kapoor’s contribution to Indian films is quite special. He has followed the tradition of the Kapoor family both behind and in front of the lens right from the start of his career.
