Ranbir Kapoor Reflects on His Parents’ Turbulent Relationship and the Impact on His Childhood and Bond with Late Father Rishi Kapoor

Recently, in an interview with Nikhil Kamath on his YouTube channel, when Ranbir Kapoor spoke about his equation with his late father, it turned out to be rather emotional and layered. Even though both Ranbir and Shiney are born into privileged families, Ranbir was able to admit on the show that he never felt an open affection from his father. He remembered living in their bungalow till he was ten, most of which he spent sitting on staircases, listening to his parents fight. My parents even used to argue much.. We lived in a bungalow and so for most of my childhood, I ran from one staircase to the other overhearing my parents fight. This he stated as saying, ” I was always scared and on the edge.”

All the characters confessed that they feared their father through Ranbir’s words of saying he had never really looked at his father’s eyes because of fear. He also mentioned that when Rishi Kapoor came back India from America, he took his car with him to help keep him humble or something like that. While introducing his father as an angry man with a heart of gold, Ranbir said, “My father was a man who had director’s. He enjoyed his family, his work, food, and alcohol; he was very vocal about everything.” However, Ranbir was always uncomfortable with his father’s temper. This was not premeditated,’ the ‘Animal’ actor explained, ‘He never shouted at us, never raised his hand at us, but just because around us his temperament was so volatile that it always scared me.’

Ranbir also shared about how his parents moved in together again when Rishi was diagnosed with cancer, and saw what an angel his mother was during such times. We learn from him that male characters of his father’s generation lacked the ability to express affection and feelings of vulnerability. I personally believe that many men of that age are afraid of being emotional, of being sensitive. He never even told me that he loved me or that he wanted to talk marriage to me., He could never just hold my hand. He did hug me but it was not a warm hug but rather had a touch of patting. Maybe I am blaming his generation, but I don’t know. He was very distant. I knew he loved me a lot and cared for me a lot but there was a distance,” said Ranbir.
