Rachel Gupta Crowned as Miss Grand International 2024, But Dramatic Events Surrounding Miss Myanmar Spark Controversy and Debate

Recently, the pageant of Miss Grand International gained much controversy, though the crowning of India’s Rachel Gupta as its winner in 2024 gave this pageant a place of pride in the competition, but its dramatic fall after the crowning moment had left the fans stunned with some shocking events. And Thae Su Nyein from Myanmar was elected to be the second runner-up.

As Gupta was basking in her victory, videos across social media were revealing the chaos behind the scenes. And when it was time to name Thae Su Nyein as second runner-up, that crowd saw an amazing-and-disheartening scene: Myanmar’s national director, Htoo Ant Lwin, strip off Thae Su Nyein’s crown and sash as the second runner-up walked away. Tears flooded Thae Su Nyein’s face, captured in an image, but it was escorted out-the sad and heartbreaking contrast within the gaiety celebrations after the victory of Ms Gupta.

In response to what he said happened after a stunning turn of events was shared by Htoo Ant Lwin through social media against Miss Grand International for issuing results which he called grossly unjust. Through this, his obscure statuses, which included a theater-like “Bye forever, garnered much attention and buzz from netizens. All of them flooded the comment section asking what has happened to him. Within the same day, a netizen tried to placate the emotional outburst by saying he was all right now but hinted at taking action against the beauty pageant.

The pageant organizers have not aired their side on the claim of Lwin. The controversy and the treatment of contestants as well as the fairness of the competition have sparked some questions on the implications the event may have on future participation by Myanmar. A drama that was unexpected went ahead to overshadow the crowning of Rachel Gupta into the throne, where Rachel took to Instagram to thank everyone who supported her, making a promise to be such a memorable queen during reign. Her statement was a simple “WE DID IT! That would win India her first Golden Crown, he says.
