Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the success of Chhaava, the Vicky Kaushal film inspired by the life of Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Addressing the inaugural of the 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in New Delhi on February 21, PM Modi appreciated the increasing popularity of the film, stating, “In dino to Chhaava ki dhoom machi hui hai”.
Laxman Utekar-directed film has been minting money at the box office, fetching appreciation for the movie’s presentation of Sambhaji Maharaj’s bravery. PM Modi attributed Maharashtra and Mumbai with taking Marathi as well as Hindi cinema to greater heights, stating that the inspiration for the film was Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel.
Chhaava stars Vicky Kaushal as Sambhaji , with Rashmika Mandanna playing the role of Yesubai Bhonsale, Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb, Diana Penty as Zinat-un-Nissa Begum, Ashutosh Rana as Hambirrao Mohite, and Divya Dutta as Soyarabai. The movie, which hit theatres on 14th February, has managed to resonate well with the audiences, crossing ₹310.5 crores globally.
While that’s happening, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reacted to demands of declaring Chhaava tax-free in the state. During his media briefing, Fadnavis thanked the film’s creators for depicting history as accurately as possible and said, “I am happy that a very good movie has been made on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. While I have not watched it, I have heard from people that this film has been made without twisting history.”
He further said that Maharashtra had done away with entertainment tax in 2017 but promised the government would seek means to popularize the film and bring it to more people.

Chhaava, not only been a box-office hit but a cultural landmark of sorts, marking the release of Sambhaji Maharaj’s story into the mainstream consciousness. With endorsements from PM Modi and the Government of Maharashtra behind it, and with the further boost of getting more and more popular by day, the movie is now surely one of this year’s best-discussed release.
While viewers throng theatres to catch a glimpse of this saga, Chhaava is a befitting example of the efficacy of films in hailing the glory of India’s heritage and history.
