Meenakshi Seshadri Discusses the Gender Disparity in Bollywood: Why Male Actors Enjoy Longer Careers Compared to Their Female Counterparts
Meenakshi Seshadri- one of the prominent actors in Bollywood in the 90s has recently have an opinion about the difference in the career span between the male and female heroes in the Bollywood cinema. Last February, she shared in her interview with Lehren Retro some of the factors that she believes contribute to the longevity of male actors in the industry compared to women. Meenakshi said that it is easy to continue a career for a long time like Amitabh Bachchan or Dharmendra because there is no drastic change like marriage through which women are burdened with lots of responsibilities.

Meenakshi also mentioned that the Indian culture does not expect a man to engage in household chores, thus leaving them free to work. Further, they do not experience limitations associated with physical conditions of pregnancy or child rearing responsibilities usually reserved for women. She said these factors lead to greater shelf-life for male actors in Bollywood than what is experienced in Hollywood. Nevertheless, the personal experience of Meenakshi herself was quite positive – the actress starred in top films of her years such as Hero, Ghayal and Meri Jung. Despite the success, she decided to retreat from the acting world after she got married to an investment banker Harish Mysore in 1995.

Aaditya is oblivious to these realities of the film industry that Meenakshi stresses knows that the disparity between the expectations of male and female actors are unjustified and that women must work in a balanced manner to ensure they maintain their careers for several years.
