Malayalam Cinema Mourns the Loss of Versatile Actor Kundara Johny, Master of Antagonistic Roles, at 71

Kundara Johny, a renowned Malayalam actor celebrated for his compelling portrayals of antagonistic characters, sadly passed away at the age of 71 in a private hospital in Kerala’s Kollam district. He succumbed to a heart attack, according to the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), on Tuesday.

Hailing from Kundara in Kollam, he made his silver screen debut at 27 in J Sasikumar’s “Nithya Vasantham” (1979). With his rugged appearance and strong physique, he quickly captured the audience’s attention, leading to numerous opportunities. However, many of these roles lacked depth or sufficient screen time, often placing him as the sidekick to the movie’s villains.

Nevertheless, Johny remained steadfast in his acting career, embracing the roles that came his way. Over the years, he became associated with films that earned critical acclaim, commercial success, or both. Notable movies during this period include IV Sasi’s “Aalkkoottathil Thaniye” (1984), Priyadarshan’s “Aram + Aram = Kinnaram” (1985), and Sathyan Anthikad’s “Nadodikkattu” (1987), where he played Varghese, a comedic thug, endearing himself to countless Malayalees.

While he excelled in depicting tough characters, it was his natural talent for comedy that truly won the audience’s affection. His role in Sibi Malayil’s “Chenkol” (1993), a sequel to “Kireedam,” stood out, portraying Parameshwaran, a former thug whose hands were paralyzed after an altercation with the protagonist in the prequel.
