Mahhi Vij Shares Her Emotional IVF Journey, Egg Freezing Experience, and Motherhood Struggles at 32
Actor Mahhi Vij recently spoke about her journey of IVF and freezing her eggs at 32. In the emotionally charged conversation on the podcast with Debina Bonnerjee, Mahhi narrated how she and husband Jay Bhanushali had different ideations about having a family. While she was itching to be a mother early in their married life, Jay was taking his time before venturing into it. Regardless of the differences, Mahhi took charge of her reproductive health and made the decision to freeze her eggs so as to safeguard her dream of motherhood.
Mahhi spoke frankly about wanting four or five kids at first, but Jay was not on the same page. She then made a tough call: freeze her eggs believing that if it did not happen naturally, she would move on to IVF. I am that kind of person: If it’s not happening, close that chapter and move on. Why sulk about it? Go on to your next chapter, which is IVF.”
But that was not easy. Egg retrievals twice left her with a feeling, not a good one, of immense physical and emotional pain. She spoke of one particularly tough moment when she was admitted to the hospital for excess bleeding. After two unsuccessful attempts at IVF, Mahhi felt she needed to take a break. She had faith that everything happened in its own time and resolved to go through the process.
At 36, Mahhi decided to try again, keeping hope alive for a positive result. This time, good things came to those who waited; she was pregnant. She recalled breaking down into tears upon receiving the news. The couple welcomed home their biological daughter, Tara, in 2019.
Besides the biological offspring, Mahhi and Jay have stepped into the shoes of foster parents to Rajveer and Khushi, further exemplifying their commitment to showering love and care on children in need.
