Mahesh Bhatt Announces Retirement from Directing After Sadak 2, Describing Himself as ‘Outdated’ and Embracing a New Role as Mentor in Bollywood
Mahesh Bhatt, the acclaimed director, who has been working on screen plays that have had profound messages or Governmant controversies, has declared that he will no longer direct. His final directorial credit was in the 2020 film Sadak 2 that starred his daughter Alia Bhatt and according to Bhatt, he now feels that he is ‘outdated’ and a ‘has-been.

Bhatt who is one of the icons of Indian cinema for decades has been special for his overlaying narratives and propensity to probe deeper into humans and their emotions. They range from the highly emotional Aashiqui that depicts love stories to the more erotic films like Jism and Silk that dare to break social cultural norms. Remarkably, Bhatt served as the director and contributed greatly, yet he feels that now is the right time to step down. Recently, in an interview with Indian Express, he said that he is enjoying this part of his life what he called asRestart where he takes pleasure in nurturing rather than innovating.
This shift in focus depicted by Bhatt is informed by his view, which sees more job satisfaction in cultivating the next generation filmmakers. He recalled the advances initiated by his protégé, Vikram Bhatt, as well as Pooja Bhatt, his daughter, who experimented a lot in filmmaking. He agreed but said that while he has gained lots of experience, he lacks the zeal to make motion Pictures that will create and sustain movies out of himself.

It would also be the end of Bhatt’s directorial career but it is also the end of Vishesh Films genre – the genre that taught the audience the art of telling the story in between the songs. Bhatt stated that with the focus on stars like Emraan Hashmi, they had had to make some compromises that they never envisioned. The evolution of the industry, he noted, combined with his own contemplation of the future of cinema, ensured the successful realization of his desire to retire from filmmaking, while drawing the attention of audiences to films that provoke their thought and raise important questions for society, as well as aiming at the cultivation of promising talents.
