Karan Johar Opens Up About Parenting Fears and the Challenges of Addressing Tough Questions from His Twins Yash and Roohi

Karan Johar says he lives in 'constant fear' of his kids asking him tough questions: 'They will find out things'

Almost three years after he became a single parent to his twins, Yash and Roohi, who were born via surrogacy in 2017, filmmaker Karan Johar recently opened up on the challenges of parenting in a modern family setup when he appeared on the Netflix reality show Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives.

A poignant moment on the show was when Karan reminisced over his emotional association with the story Neelam Kothari told about her own experiences of family and divorce. He said, “That really moved me because I remember those days so clearly.”. I really teared up; I was actually connecting to it on an emotional level. His thoughts are what resonated with the reality of modern parenting, especially now that he has to contend with his children possibly asking him questions about his family dynamic and personal life. Karan said, “My constant fear is that I also have to deal with those questions from my own children about my circumstances and that I have a modern family situation.”

Karan’s fears are not merely logistical in nature; they pertain to the emotional and social implications of his sexual orientation, which has become a subject of public speculation and scrutiny. He said he is cognizant that his children will eventually come across information about him that could provide for some uncomfortable conversations. “They will find out things, and I will have to be answerable,” he said, noting the responsibility he feels in being honest and thoughtful as Yash and Roohi grow older.

Reflecting on the social issues he faces, Karan had earlier said in an interview with India Today, “Everybody knows what my sexual orientation is. I don’t need to scream it out. If I need to spell it out, I won’t only because I live in a country where I could possibly be jailed for saying this.” This statement speaks of the complexity of his struggle in a society where personal truth and traditional norms often go at loggerheads.

Despite all the pressures and fears, Karan Johar has been able to come out on top in his professional life. He was back to making a film after a long time as he had made the romantic drama Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. He also continued producing films under his banner Dharma Productions, though financial issues surrounded him during this period. He has just sold 50% of his production house to businessman Adar Poonawalla for ₹1000 crore. Karan therefore, continues to strive, as a filmmaker and also as a father, holding to his commitment of confronting the problems of modern parenting honestly and with integrity.
