Ranya Rao Arrested for Smuggling Gold from Dubai: Actress Earned Lakhs per Trip, Family Responds

It has been reported that Karnataka actress Ranya Rao was found smuggling gold at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru during her return journey from Dubai. Reportedly, Rao made about 30 trips to Dubai over a period of one year, each time smuggling in kilos of gold. Sources suggest that she was paid Rs 1 lakh per kg of gold smuggled and made around Rs 12-13 lakh on each trip by smuggling approximately 12-13 kg of gold.

Ranya, the stepdaughter of Ramachandra Rao, Director General of Police, Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation, reportedly employed innovative methods to evade security at airports. According to sources, she taped gold on her body by hiding it in modified jackets and waist belts; Rao, during each of her travels, made use of the same jackets and belts for her smuggling operations.

This is the reason why authorities pegged it on her frequent trips to Dubai. Coming back from a recent trip, Rao was netted in by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials just before she could clear airport security. This raid resulted in the recovery of gold jewellery which amounted to Rs 2.06 crores and cash amounting to Rs 2.67 euros at her residence in Bengaluru. Further investigation by the authorities intends to establish whether Rao was part of a more extensive smuggling syndicate.

Ranya Rao claimed during the investigation that she had been blackmailed to become a part of the gold smuggling operations. Meanwhile, her father, IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, dissociated himself from the scandal and expressed shock and devastation through an official statement, saying he was not aware of his daughter’s actions. There had never been a blot on his career, and as a father, he was just as shocked as anyone else, Rao clarified further that his daughter lived separately with her husband, alluding to family issues as a contributing factor.

While the case continues to unravel, so does the evidence collection, with special attention on Ranya Rao’s involvement in the smuggling ring as the significant fulcrum of the investigation. She leaves both media and family holding their noses at the repercussions arising from hearing something so shocking as that which is alleged.
