Challenges in Bollywood Biopics: Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency Faces Certification Delays, While Vidya Balan’s Indira Gandhi Series Continues Development Hurdles
Increased anticipation for history-themed biopics is evident in Bollywood; however, not all much-anticipated movies are immune to the issue of overly lengthy delays. Emergency, the film directed by Kangana Ranaut which features the movie making efforts during the 1975 Emergency led by Indira Gandhi has been halted. Ranaut also recently shared her sorrow on x, the film is not releasing because, according to Ranaut it is still with Central Board of Film Certification. Sikh people again protested about the portrayal of the film and they also have issues to do with its current delays.

But the Emergency that Kangana wants to bring to the screens is not the only project dedicated to Indira Gandhi. Even before Kangana’s venture was announced, Vidya Balan had secured the rights to Sagarika Ghose’s book, Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister, in the year 2018. Balan who had always wanted to portray the role planned on doing this for a web series. Initially planned under Roy Kapur Films ’production banner, the series was announced to be directed by Ritesh Batra, the maker of The Lunchbox.
Speaking in 2019, Balan said that it was still a work in progress because it is a complex process to adapt the story to web show. She also said that rejected other political biopics including J Jayalalithaa in Thalaivi to play the role of Gandhi.

While fans are anticipating the release of these movies, the problems that the two grand biopics encountered illustrate the difficulties of adapting the lives of historical personalities to the big screen.
