The recently released web series IC 184 The Kandahar Hijack starring Vijay Varma has brought back memories of one of the most chaotic times in India’s defense history. This drama focuses on the hostage crisis of the Indian Airlines Flight IC814 in the year 1999 when it was being flown to Kandahar in Afghanistan. Recently, AS Dulat, the then Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), shed light on a critical yet previously concealed detail: this relates to the identification of one of the high profile people on the ill fated flight.

However, as Barkha Dutt, the journalist who interviewed Dulat, revealed he said the shadowy passenger was Shashi Bhushan Singh Tomar, the R&AW station chief in Kathmandu at the time. Tomar was sitting in 16C, though it was hushened to prevent people from identifying him. Dulat also disclosed that Tomar had some influential contacts; two of his brothers-in-law served in the PMO – one of them being NK Singh, while the other was the chief of the NSG.
Describing atmosphere in the plane, Dulat said that the pressure and the secrecy with regard to the presence of Tomar on the flight was immense. He went on to say that in NK Singh’s case, the concern as expressed was very much apparent although it was only known to a few. “That nobody in the entire government knew Tomar was on board during the Amritsar part of the hijack, except for me,” Dulat said. “We chose not to make it public to ensure he was safe because if the terrorists had known then his life would be in danger.”

Moreover, a new detail provided by Dulat about creating the show, he said that, the show not true when it illustrated that junior officer informed the government about the hijack. “Honestly there was no license warning,” he stated. “This dramatic narrative of events and of acts of Violence against Nepalese is therefore misleading.”

The hijack, as described by Tomar to Dulat, after he was released by the terrorists, portrayed the calmness of this man under extreme pressure. The inside information provided by Dulat gives a fresh view into the hijack affair and reveals the high level of conspiracy and a number of strategic actions taken during the crisis.
