The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (IB Ministry) summoned Netflix’s content head on September 3 in response to the uproar surrounding the platform’s “IC814” web series, according to sources cited by ANI.

This occurred one day after viewers of X, the former name of Twitter, claimed that the series was inaccurate on social media. The Netflix series “IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack” received allegations from social media users on September 1 of “hiding the real identities of the terrorists involved in the 1999 incident,” according to PTI.

The day after, Mukesh Chhabra, the director of casting for the show, responded by saying that the perpetrators had given each other nicknames and that appropriate research had been done for the show. The show is based on the December 24, 1999, hijacking of an Indian aircraft by five terrorists, which occurred 40 minutes after the flight took off from Kathmandu. On August 29, Netflix began to stream it.

Calls to boycott the streamer and the show went viral on social media even after casting director Mukesh Chhabra made it clear that the identities were codenames. However, the voices calling for a boycott became more strident, particularly after Amit Malviya of the BJP attacked the producers’ decision to omit the hijackers’ names from the series.

It would be interesting to see what the government does after speaking with the president of Netflix, given how the controversy is still going strong and how strongly individuals on both sides of the political spectrum are debating each other. It will be known on Wednesday following the rumored meeting whether there will be a simple tap on the knuckles, an outright ban, or moving on to other things.
