Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor paid her heart-warming tribute to the fashion great Rohit Bal on this Diwali, which succumbed to prolonged illness, on November 1, 2024. Lovingly referred to in fashion circles as ‘Gudda,’ the legend will be deeply missed. For many in the fashion business, it was time for reflection and memories on this man’s extraordinary work toward Indian couture. Sonam picked pieces from Bal’s archival collection to celebrate his artistry during one of the more festive times of the year while honor-ing the great man’s legacy, in a touching tribute.

During Diwali celebrations, Sonam went to Instagram to narrate her emotional tribute, telling people about some special memories that she shared while working with Bal and how his life influenced her both as a personal leader and professional inspiration. The bittersweet nature of the celebration was reflected well in her post, reflecting both happiness and sadness at the same time. She posted, “Happy Diwali to all,” sharing this year’s festive wish but with a heavy heart. Sonam wore one of Bal’s stunning masterpieces, and despite him having passed away, Sonam felt a connection in his work.

She picked pieces that reflect his philosophy of design, in tribute to Rohit Bal on Diwali. So she wore items from those of his celebrated collections—from “Husn-e-Taihrat” by Rohit Bal, of 2015, through the “Kroshni” collection of 2016, to one exquisite white dress from what turned out to be Bal’s last “Kaynaat” collection. Every garment showed the Rohit Bal stamp of traditional Indian artisanry combined with contemporary luxury, a fitting tribute, after all.

In her Instagram tribute, Sonam recalled how she was inspired by his last show and hoped for the future he still had ahead. She also recalled walking the runway several times for him, where his bespoke creations often seemed like wearable art. She connected with Bal’s work at a very personal level; there were memories of special moments shared in his creations.

The dreamy quality that was more synonymous with Rohit Bal than anything else defined Sonam’s Diwali look. The simple, beautiful white dress had layered, draped upon it the silkiest robe in softest brown, giving the outfit a striking look as though culled straight out of Rohit Bal’s fashion palette. A striking floral choker, of course, added an essential flair to her entire ensemble-the tribute paid to Bal’s taste for detail and love of floral motifs that always peppered his designs.
