Gangubai Kathiawadi Review: One of the much-awaited films of 2022, Gangubai Kathiawadi is all set to hit theatres on Friday. Well, when you are going to watch a Sanjay Leela Bhansali, you expect phenomenal performances. He knows how to get the best out of an actor. Gangubai Kathiawadi is another thrilling underworld drama that has something for everyone: Heartbreak, Crime, humor. The balance that Bhansali tries to create from this mixing is quite convincing, thanks to Alia Bhatt who effortlessly jumps back and forth between melodramatic, romantic, and humorous scenes.
Alia Bhatt as an actor has come a long way. Gangubai is her first collaboration with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and to be honest, she has really outdone herself for the character. Alia as Gangubai soaks it all in with so much conviction. Be it her body language, her strong-headed decisions, or even humor, Alia was at her best.
Gangubai is about a woman who was not able to change her fate but didn’t give up her dreams. Gangubai was a strong-headed woman, who knew her business well. She was a mafia queen with a heart of gold. Gangubai fought for the rights of voiceless women and showed the mirror to society. She was fearless and fierce. Gangubai Kathiwadi is a fantastic musical gangster with a feminist tone and a fine example that how much can be extracted from the clichés of the genre.
To simply put, there are scenes that will make you say – Waah! Gangubai has beautifully portrayed female friendship as well. Gangu and Kamli’s bond is a solid example that women can do wonders when they are supported by other women.

Talking about the supporting characters, Ajay Devgn as Rahim Lala was the right choice. He was quite convincing. Apart from it, we loved Shantanu’s part. His romance with Alia Bhatt melted our hearts. Notably, with Gangbai, he is also making his big-screen debut.
The music of the film is like fresh air of breath, it is the major takeaway from the film. The soulful music will stay with us for a long time.
What did we feel was missing?
There are a few scenes that were stretched unnecessary. Apart from it, we wanted to watch more of Raziabai, the antagonist in the film. There was a small part, a lot could have been done. Some scenes of the film will give Ram Leela Vibe! But that’s not a bad thing!
Final Words
We rate the film 3.5 stars! Watch it for Alia Bhatt. Two legends have come together and it wouldn’t be wrong to call it Alia’s best performance so far. Over the years, her craft has only grown and she has proved her mettle as an actor so many times. Just a spoiler alert – You will also find Huma Qureshi in the film. Gangubai is slated to release on February 25 and we highly recommend the film.
