Farida Jalal Expresses Discontent Over Typecasting in Bollywood: Veteran Actress Voices Frustration at Being Limited to Mother and Grandmother Roles Compared to Male Counterparts

Farida Jalal, who has been involved in both ‘mainstream’ Bollywood as well as art house films for a long time, has been successful in portraying the character of a mother or grandmother in a number of films. But in an interview to the Times of India, Jalal has revealed her irritation of getting mostly such roles offered to her. However, owing to her vast and varied filmography list featuring songs alongside stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Akshay Kumar, Jalal believes she’s been quite limited in the industry.

Looking back at her movie career, Jalal expresses the same frustrations about the types of roles she has been afforded. “I have been waiting for a difficult role to play and it seems like they are giving me more mom and grandmom roles,” she added. Later she expressed sadness of not being able to portray different characters from villain to comedian like Anupam Kher or like the late Amrish Puri at least she got chance to play only mothers. Jalal’s comment also brings out the trend of stereotyping in Bollywood, especially in the case of veteran actresses who are provided with stereotyped roles.

Farida Jalal acted in numerous movies in her career, starting from the iconic Aradhana (1969), Bobby (1973), etc to Heeramandi (2024), web series by Sanjay Leela Bhansali where she had a prominent role. Despite her stretch of performance and significant contribution to the film industry, she still looks for roles that will help her transform and escape the captivity of categorization. Jalal thus calls for more extra-ordinary and multi-dimensional roles and this demands more of woman in cinemas.
