Farah Khan’s Candid Revelation on Late Pregnancy and IVF: Her Struggles, Challenges, and Journey to Motherhood
Acclaimed director and choreographer Farah Khan is famous for her lively nature and remarkable work in Indian cinema. But beneath the success of her career is a very personal journey of infertility and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Recently, on a podcast with actor Debina Bonnerjee, Farah spoke openly about conceiving her triplets, Czar, Anya, and Diva, via IVF and the trouble she encountered on the way.
Struggles with Late Pregnancy
Farah Khan married at the age of 40 to director Shirish Kunder, and she accepted that a late pregnancy was unavoidable. She said, “Pehle toh main bolungi late pregnancy kyuki meri shaadi hi late hui. I was 40 years old when I got married.”. Toh waise bhi pregnancy late hi honi thi. (First of all, I am going to say late pregnancy because my marriage was delayed. I was 40 years old when I got married, so anyway, the pregnancy was going to be late.)
Even knowing that naturally getting pregnant could be a problem, she and her husband first tried for a year or two. Based on medical consultation, they tried natural conception first before resorting to other measures. Sadly, their actions were not successful. “Uske baad ek-do saal hum log ne naturally try kiya kyuki hum ek gynaecologist ke paas gaye the and I said ki I am old toh… unhone kaha, ‘Nahi try naturally’, toh naturally nahi ho raha tha.” (After a year or two, we tried naturally because we went to a gynecologist, and I said I am too old… He said, ‘Don’t try naturally’, but it was not happening naturally.)
The Choice of IVF
A breakthrough occurred when a friend, an older mother-to-be herself carrying twins, suggested to Farah that she meet with an IVF specialist right away. Not waiting any longer, she followed her friend’s advice and met a fertility specialist. “Fortunately ek friend mill gayi jo abhi thodi older hai, aur she was carrying twins.”. She said, ‘Listen, tomorrow morning you are just going to this gynaecologist… to this IVF doctor.’ The next morning we started the IVF.” (Luckily, a friend of mine was a little older, and she was carrying twins. She said, ‘Listen, tomorrow morning you are just going to this gynecologist… to this IVF doctor.’ The next morning we started the IVF.)
The physician pointed out that time was crucial and that Farah was already two years behind in terms of treatment. “She said, ‘You have to start today, aap already 2 saal late aa rahe ho mere paas.’ Toh that time I was 42 already, so waha se phir humne IVF ki journey shuru ki.” (She said, ‘You have to start today, you are already 2 years late.’ So at that time, I was 42 already, and from there, we started the journey of IVF.)

Understanding IVF and Considerations Before Treatment
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a medical intervention in which an egg and sperm are allowed to combine in a lab before implanting the resulting embryo into the womb. IVF is one of the most successful treatments for infertility due to reasons like low ovarian reserve, tubal blockage, or low sperm count.
Before choosing IVF, couples should take into account the following:
1. Age Factor: The age of a woman is a significant factor in the success of IVF treatments. With increasing age, ovarian reserve decreases, which can affect the success of IVF.
2. Health Conditions: Any underlying health conditions such as diabetes or thyroid issues must be controlled prior to undergoing IVF to enhance the likelihood of a successful pregnancy.
3. Lifestyle Options: Not smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug abuse while maintaining a healthy lifestyle can go a long way in improving fertility and the success rate of IVF treatment.
4. Financial Planning: IVF is a costly procedure, and couples need to be mindful of the financial implications and plan ahead.
