Mrs, Sanya Malhotra’s latest flick, has sparked a heated debate online. While the film has received praise for its daring portrayal of patriarchal ideals, the Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF), a men’s rights organisation, has accused it of spreading toxic feminism.

Mrs., directed by Arati Kadav, is an adaption of the Malayalam hit The Great Indian Kitchen (2021). The film follows an aspiring dancer who, after marriage, is forced to perform unending home chores in a patriarchal society. Many viewers have found her story of resistance and self-discovery to be compelling.

However, SIFF took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize the film, arguing that men already work long hours in demanding jobs at construction sites, airports, factories, and even the country’s borders. They questioned why men should share household chores, calling the film’s portrayal of women’s struggles oppression.

In a series of tweets, SIFF argued that women do not regard physically demanding occupations as legitimate employment and accused the film of disregarding the hardship that men suffer. They further contended that because women frequently crave material goods such as clothing and technology, they should perform the majority of household labour.

Fans of Mrs were quick to defend the film, calling out SIFF’s arguments as flawed. One fan pointed out that women also work in construction, factories, and other demanding jobs, often while managing household responsibilities. They wrote, “Men in the same roles come home and demand hot rotis, while women juggle both work and home.”

Others questioned why SIFF felt threatened by the film. “If movies like Arjun Reddy are just art, why is Mrs being criticized?” asked one user. Another fan highlighted that the film is not just about household chores but about women being denied the freedom to pursue their passions.

Despite the criticism, many viewers praised Mrs for its honest portrayal of gender inequality. One fan said, Truth is bitter, and some men can’t digest it. Another wrote, I wouldn’t have my wife do all the work. She is not a housekeeper.

Mrs is now showing on ZEE5, starring Sanya Malhotra and Kanwaljit Singh. While the film continues to evoke a variety of opinions, it has undoubtedly sparked an important discussion about gender roles and equality in Indian households.

As the argument continues, one thing is certain: Mrs. has hit a chord, pushing audiences to confront painful truths about social conventions.
