Bombay HC Orders CBFC to Make Final Decision on Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency by Wednesday

The co-producers of the film Emergency, starring and directed by Kangana Ranaut, have claimed that the movie’s release is being blocked due to political interference from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The film, which deals with sensitive topics, is believed to be seen as anti-Sikh,leading to delays in its certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

During a recent court hearing, lawyers for Zee Studios, which is producing the film, argued that the CBFC is purposely delaying the film’s certification until after the Haryana state elections in October to protect the BJP’s interests. They have accused the certification board of acting under political pressure. The Bombay High Court has directed the CBFC to make a final decision on the film’s certification by September 25, urging the board to be bold and make a decision regardless of political pressures.

The CBFC has requested more time to review the film, stating that their revising committee needs to carefully evaluate it before issuing a certification. Despite this, the court has insisted that a decision must be made by the specified deadline, leaving the film’s release uncertain.

Emergency features a notable cast, including Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and Shreyas Talpade, who plays former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Anupam Kher portrays Jayaprakash Narayan, and the late Satish Kaushik appears as Jagjivan Ram.

The film has faced calls for a boycott from Sikh organizations like the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akal Takht. These groups allege that the film portrays the Sikh community negatively and have demanded an immediate ban.

Originally set for release on September 6, the film’s release is now in question due to these controversies. Kangana Ranaut defended the film at a recent event, saying it reveals important parts of history and has been reviewed by historians. She criticized those opposing the film and mentioned that previous governments had labeled Khalistanis
