Eiffel Tower Day Traditions: Fun Ways to Celebrate This Iconic Landmark

Eiffel Tower Day is observed on March 31 to honor the anniversary of the Eiffel Tower’s opening. Revealed to the globe on this date in 1889, this legendary structure has endured throughout the years and continues to be one of the greatest marvels of the world. Rising to1,063 feet, the Eiffel Tower surveys the city of Paris and represents the achievement of contemporary engineering and western culture.

As one of the most iconic landmarks globally, Eiffel Tower Day is a day of festivity for countless individuals. From Calcutta to California, individuals unite to celebrate this architectural marvel with a toast.

Background of Eiffel Tower Day

As the nation reached the centennial of the French Revolution, the French government organized an international exhibition to showcase the industrial progress of the 19th century. A design contest took place in central Paris, and over 100 artists submitted their concepts.

One of the contributors was Gustave Eiffel, who suggested a lattice iron tower that would exceed 1,000 feet in height. Armed with an impressive resume featuring the Statue of Liberty, he managed to persuade the Centennial Committee that this extraordinary achievement could be realized. The agreement to construct the tower was given to him in 1887.

Addressing years of doubt, critique, and even demonstrations, he started the project on January 28, 1887. In just two years, two months, and five days, he finished the tower and showcased it to the French government for display. The remaining events are well-known.

Gustave’s vision revitalized the streets of Paris, turning it into the renowned city of love, even though that wasn’t his goal. In his own language, he aimed for the tower to represent the “significant scientific movement of the eighteenth century and the Revolution of 1789.”

Currently, the tower is located in the center of Europe and attracts millions of tourists annually. Since the year 2000, the tower’s golden splendor has been enhanced by 20,000 6W bulbs that blink rapidly for five minutes at each twilight hour. On March 31, we honor the brilliance and his priceless contribution to humanity.
