Disha Vakani Will Not Return to Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Confirms Producer Asit Modi While Addressing Dayaben’s Future on the Show

Fans and the show’s maker are missing Disha Vakani, so much the actor who plays Dayaben in the sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Disha, since taking her maternity leave in 2018, has not returned to the sitcom, which leaves fans jumping for more updates on her character. Creator and producer of the long-running show Asit Kumarr Modi has confirmed that Disha will not be returning to the series, citing personal reasons and life changes as major factors.

Recently, in a conversation with News 18 Showsha, Modi spoke about Disha’s long absence and how the show was trying to fill the gap that had been left behind by her. He admitted that the character of Dayaben was very important and he, personally and professionally, felt sad that the situation had taken so long to be resolved.

“It is very important to bring back Dayaben because I also miss her,” Modi said, talking about the character in the show. However, he elaborated on the various reasons contributing to the delay. “Sometimes circumstances change in such a way that certain things happen and it gets delayed. Sometimes the story gets prolonged. Sometimes some big events come. There were elections in 2024, there was IPL and then the World Cup matches, the rainy season. It gets delayed because of some reasons,” he explained.

The producer added that Disha Vakani is not likely to return because of her busy schedule raising her two children. Speaking at a distance about her, Modi termed her more than just a colleague and described the real nature of their bond: “I am still trying. I believe Disha Vakani can’t be back. She has two children. She is like my sister. Even today, we have a very close relationship with her family.”. My sister Disha Vakani has tied Rakhi to me. Father and brother, for her, are a family to me too. You both worked for 17 years, and that has become like a family to you, he said.

For Disha, balancing family life with professional commitments has made it challenging to consider returning to the demanding schedule of a television show. “It is difficult for her now (to return to the show). For women, life changes after marriage. Working with small children and managing the house is really a bit difficult for them,” Modi said, empathizing with her situation.

Despite this confirmation, Modi hasn’t lost all hope. “I am still positive. I feel somewhere that god will do some miracle and she will return. If she comes, then it will be a good thing. If for some reason she does not come, then I will have to bring another Dayaben for the show,” he concluded.

Disha Vakani’s portrayal of Dayaben remains iconic, with her unique mannerisms and comedic timing becoming a cultural phenomenon. While fans and the production team will undoubtedly miss her presence, the show continues its efforts to fill the gap she left behind. Whether through a miracle return or the introduction of a new actor for the role, the legacy of Dayaben in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is sure to endure.
