Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty, an icon in Indian cinema, is going to receive the coveted Dadasaheb Phalke Award, a recognition designed for those who have contributed well to the Indian film industry. The Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had announced this on September 30 with impressive mentions of the memorable journeys and inspirations given by Mithun to the upcoming artists. Talking to ET, Mithun said, “I have no words to express what I am feeling. I am neither able to cry in sorrow, nor in joy.”

This honor has overwhelmed the charming grey-haired film star who used to come out of the modest bylanes of Kolkata. Being a family man and a fan favourite, he dedicated the award to them. “A boy from such a place winning such an honour…I could not have imagined this. I am extremely happy”. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award will be bestowed upon him in the 70th National Film Awards ceremony happening on 8th October, 2024 as a tribute to the unremitting striving for more than four decades.

Mithun, who debuted in the highly-discussed film, Mrigayaa won a National Award. His contribution through his dance and performing within films like Disco Dancer gave him the title of “Disco King” for generations. An award like this pays tribute not only to Mithun’s achievements as an actor but also to cultural contributions he has made for the new generations of Indians from all states who love cinema.
