Chhaava Movie Review: Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna Bring History to Life in Laxman Utekar’s Epic on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj

One of the much-awaited movies of the year, Chhaava, has finally hit the silver screen. Laxman Utekar’s film captures the inspiring journey of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the bold son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The action-drama takes the audience to the core of a more deserving epic history than it has had in popular historic stories. Right from the first frame, Laxman Utekar’s direction and narrative skills hold the audience captive to the screen, with the promise of an immersive cinematic experience.

Vicky Kaushal as the Unbeatable ‘Raje’

While shooting Chhaava, director Laxman Utekar never called Vicky Kaushal anything other than ‘Raje’—a reflection of his faith in the actor’s capability to bring life to the larger-than-life character. Kaushal gives a dominating performance, and the audience is convinced of his acting as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He performs, speaks, and even breathes as the Maratha king, reiterating once more why he is one of the best actors in the industry. The make-up is impressive, with Kaushal both depicting the physical endurance and emotional depth needed to do justice to this historical figure.

An Engaging Narrative and Action Sequences

The movie starts with Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj being coronated as the king of the Marathas and then getting rapidly into his brutal fight with the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, who is acted by Akshaye Khanna. Chhaava, at 2 hours and 35 minutes, gets onto the screen the wars the Mughals and the Marathas fought, culminating in a final takeover of the king after nine years of war. The action sequences are thrilling and meant to leave the viewers sitting on the edge of their seats. More knowledge of Marathas’ mythic guerrilla warfare techniques would have added some extra oomph to the story, though. Akshaye Khanna’s Brilliant Performance as Aurangzeb

Akshaye Khanna keeps pace with Vicky Kaushal’s enthusiasm with his raw performance as Aurangzeb. From his towering height to the crisp delivery of lines, Khanna completely gets into the skin of the Mughal emperor and is formidable as a villain. His make-over is excellent, and his presence on screen carries the authority and threat one of India’s greatest rulers should. Khanna’s performance is one of the best things about the movie, and he proves his acting chops once again. Rashmika Mandanna stars as Maharani Yesubai Bhonsale

Adding further strength to the film is Rashmika Mandanna, who delivers a heartfelt performance as Maharani Yesubai Bhonsale, the queen of the Maratha Empire. Balancing strength and grace, she embodies the queen’s unwavering resilience and sharp intellect. With powerful dialogue delivery and expressive eyes, Mandanna ensures that Maharani Yesubai’s presence is felt in every scene she graces. Her portrayal stands out as a crucial element that brings emotional depth to the film’s historical retelling.

AR Rahman’s Musical Genius

No epic in history is ever complete without a haunting music, and Chhaava owes a lot to the musical talents of AR Rahman. The background score, and intense numbers such as Aaya Re Toofan, Jaane Tu, and Zinda Rahey, lend depth to the grand narrative of the movie. While the music is as perfect a companion to the narrative as one can imagine, certain of the background scores may take one back to Jodha Akbar, leaving the viewers with a sense of familiarity at certain points.
