ARM movie review: A landmark film in Tovino Thomas’ career

Tovino Thomas is probably the most unlucky Malayalam actor of his generation. Despite a perfect opportunity to soar to prominence with the superhero feature Minnal Murali, which was fantastic, Tovino was unable to capitalize on it because to the Covid crisis necessitating a direct-to-OTT release. He lost out on the applause, whistles, and confetti that would have packed theatres during his on-screen appearances. Few actors are fortunate enough to have such an opportunity twice, but Tovino has been given a second chance with rookie director Jithin Laal’s thrilling visual extravaganza.

Set over three diverse eras, all linked by a similar ingredient, Ajayante Randam Moshanam expertly combines fantasy, adventure, and action, giving the cast and crew the chance to shine, particularly Tovino, who plays three parts. While Sujith Nambiar’s screenplay occasionally flips between timeframes, the plot is primarily told chronologically, with ingenious cross-references connecting the three narratives.

First, we meet Kunjikelu (Tovino), a Kalaripayattu warrior from Haripuram tasked by the King with driving out non-native miscreants who have taken control of the market. Upon successfully completing his mission, the King offers him any reward of his choice and Kunjikelu requests the Chiyyothi Vilakku (Chiyyothi Lamp), a powerful idol forged from a meteor that struck Haripuram years ago

In the second timeline, we meet Maniyan (Tovino), a burglar with outstanding martial arts skills and leopard-like speed who terrorizes Haripuram’s aristocracy. Despite several efforts, the police were unable to apprehend him. Born into a lower caste, Maniyan, his wife Manikyam (Surabhi Lakshmi), and their daughter experience continual harassment from the powerful, but only when Maniyan is away, because no one in Haripuram can question him.

The third plotline focuses on Ajayan (Tovino), Maniyan’s grandson who works as an electrician. Despite his efforts to disassociate himself from his grandfather’s ‘heritage,’ Haripuram’s elite see him with mistrust, labeling him a possible thief. His only solace is his friendship with Lakshmi (Krithi Shetty), a member of a rich family.

One of the film’s greatest virtues is its ability to take the hero to new heights, which Jithin and Sujith achieve. From Tovino’s first debut, the creators never missed an opportunity to provide memorable moments. While Kunjikelu’s introduction might have used more buildup, given that this is Tovino’s first appearance on television, the actor’s dominating presence makes up for it.
