CBFC suggests changes in Chhaava, removes controversial scenes, alters dialogues for February 14 release
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has recommended several changes in the upcoming film Chhaava, directed by Laxman Utekar, ahead of its release on February 14. The board has asked the makers to remove or alter certain scenes and dialogues to avoid hurting audience sentiments or misrepresenting history.
According to reports, the CBFC has granted the film a U/A 16+ certificate. One of the key changes includes removing a scene showing Maratha warriors wearing sarees. Additionally, dialogues referencing the Mughal Empire have been modified. For instance, the line Mughal sultanat ka zeher has been replaced with Uss samay, kayi shaasak aur sultanat khud ko zinda rakhne ki koshish kar rahe the. Similarly, Khoon toh aakhir Mughalon ka hi hai has been changed to Khoon toh hai Aurang ka hi. Words like haramzaadon and haramzaada have been muted, and Aameen has been replaced with Jai Bhavani.
The film, which stars Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, also faced controversy over a lezim dance sequence. The lezim, a traditional Maharashtrian musical instrument, was featured in a scene where Kaushal and Mandanna dance to its beats. However, after protests from certain groups, the director decided to remove the scene.
Defending the scene, Vicky Kaushal explained that the lezim sequence was a small part of the film, lasting only 20-30 seconds. He stated, Sambhaji Maharaj was a king of the people, and if someone asked him to play (lezim) with them, the king would definitely oblige. But if his followers feel it was a bit off… It is not important to the movie’s story, so we have removed it. He also emphasized that the film aims to showcase Maratha culture on a global platform.
