Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light has achieved a historic milestone by being the first Indian film in over four decades to enter the prestigious Competition section of the Cannes Film Festival, contending for the coveted Palme d’Or award. This announcement was made during the official selection line-up reveal for the 2024 edition of the festival, led by Iris Knobloch and Thierry Fremaux.
Joining Kapadia’s film is Sandhya Suri’s Santosh, featured in the Un Certain Regard section. Kapadia, an FTII alumna renowned for her documentary ‘A Night of Knowing Nothing,’ which previously won the Oeil d’or (Golden Eye) at Cannes, now ventures into narrative filmmaking with ‘All We Imagine As Light.’
The film’s storyline revolves around Prabha, a nurse, who receives a surprising gift from her estranged husband, causing upheaval in her life. Meanwhile, her roommate Anu struggles to find privacy in the bustling city for intimate moments with her boyfriend. The narrative takes an intriguing turn when the two nurses embark on a road trip to a beach town, where a mystical forest becomes a canvas for their dreams.

This marks a significant moment for Indian cinema, with Kapadia’s film presenting alongside 19 other titles in the main segment. The last Indian entry to vie for the Palme d’Or was Mrinal Sen’s Kharij in 1983.
