Manoj Kumar, the veteran Bollywood actor and filmmaker popularly known for his patriotic films, passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai. The legendary star had been unwell for some time, suffering from age-related ailments, and he breathed his last at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. Kumar’s physician Dr. Santosh Shetty confirmed his death. His son, Kunal Goswami, also stated that the actor had been unwell for quite a while.

The contribution of Manoj Kumar to the Indian film industry is unparalleled. Born under the name Harikrishan Goswami in 1937 in Punjab, he achieved fame in the 1960s and 1970s and was greatly loved and respected for his particular brand of patriotism in films. Movies like Shaheed, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, and Kranti resonated with the masses and significantly contributed to the emergence of the Indian socio-political narrative on nationalism. His performances and direction earned him a rightful place among the stalwarts and shapers of Bollywood history and stardom.

Throughout his remarkable career, Kumar garnered several prestigious awards. The award of Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest award in civil service, was bestowed upon him for his immense contribution to Indian cinema. Further recognition came his way in the form of India’s highest award in filmmaking, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

As news of his passing streamed in, accolades started pouring from all quarters. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi paid tribute to Kumar as the “icon of Indian cinema” whose works “ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations.” With grief, filmmaker Ashoke Pandit stated Kumar’s passing was a “great loss to the film industry” and that Kumar’s legacy would always be cherished.

The grieving process instigated in the hearts of fans alike, celebrities and political leaders as they paid homage to the legendary actor as a storyteller who, through the canvas of cinema, presented patriotism so worthy of remembrance. With him gone, Indian cinema has not lost merely a star but a true visionary whose films will carry on inspiring audiences for many more generations.
