Amitabh Bachchan hilariously shares how he pretends to understand Jaya Bachchan’s Bengali conversations

Amitabh Bachchan, known for sharing life stories and advice on Kaun Banega Crorepati, recently opened up about his experiences with his wife, Jaya Bachchan. On this week’s episode, the legendary actor revealed why he gets nervous when Jaya calls him and how he pretends to understand Bengali during their conversations.  

The episode introduced contestant Saurav Choudhary from Kolkata, West Bengal, who is a Senior Account Assistant at a CA firm. While talking to Saurav, Amitabh recalled his own journey of learning Bengali. He shared that during his early days, his office was located near the Bengal Chamber of Commerce in Dalhousie.

His company offered ₹3000 for employees to take Bengali language classes, with an exam after three months. At that time, Amitabh’s monthly salary was just ₹500, and after expenses, he had only ₹150 left. He admitted that he spent the entire ₹3000 for the course within three days but didn’t let this stop him. Instead, he practiced Bengali with two friends after office hours and managed to pass the exam. 

However, Amitabh admitted he no longer speaks Bengali fluently, which sometimes creates funny situations with Jaya, who is fluent in the language. He shared a recent incident when Jaya, who was shooting a film in Goa, called him. Amitabh explained that they usually communicate through messages, so her call made him anxious.

 “When my wife calls, I get nervous, not knowing what’s going to happen,” he said, laughing. During the call, Jaya spoke in Bengali because there were people around. “I didn’t understand a word. I just kept saying ‘ha ha’ until I had to confess I didn’t know what she was saying,” Amitabh said.  

Amitabh humorously added that today, he only knows a few Bengali phrases like Besi jane na, ektu ektu jaane (I don’t know much, very little I can understand).  

Married since 1973, Amitabh and Jaya have worked together in iconic films like Zanjeer, Sholay, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Their anecdotes continue to delight fans, showing their bond even after 51 years of marriage.
