Amitabh Bachchan turns 80: A look at his best performances of the decade

A visit to 50 years of Amitabh Bachchan’s career. Here is why he is Shahanshah of Bollywood

We wonder if there is anyone in Bollywood more loved than sir Bachchan, our Angry Young Man, the Big B and the official Paa. Born on October 11 1942, he has been a fantastic actor, one of the most loved anchors and a great producer. Starting his career as a narrator in 1968’s Bhuvan Shome by Mrinal Sen, his first acting role was in Saat Hindustani, which didn’t come out very well. Later, he gained popularity with films like Zanjeer, Deewar and Sholay and became the official Angry Young Man for all. Well, this was just his early career. He has a legacy of five decades in the film industry, and it would be impossible to appreciate his work in one write-up.

So, here we have collected his best works of this decade, and no wonder his spark has always been the same.

Gulab Sitaboo

Gulab Sitaboo is among the most popular ones because it has to be. The stunning trailer itself was a reflection of the fantastic acting of Bachchan people can expect to see. While Ayushmann is any way at his best with him. Bachchan plays the role of Mirza, a Bollywood character that no one has witnessed so far. He plays a 78-year-old man, and throughout the film, his character development of him, turning into a greedy man, is worth watching.

Badla

Badla is one of the most underrated films of the decade and perhaps one of the most underrated performances of Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh is the face, Badal Gupta, of the imposter character of Rani’s Husband. He is playing the role of a lawyer, and what a mindblowing performance he gave there. Badla being a thriller, Amitabh was the person who managed to pull that thrill off along with Tapsee’s dual character.

Pink

‘No means No’ when we say this sentence, we often go back to the court scene and Amitabh Bachchan’s speech saying No means No. Saying no is a complete sentence; once a girl says so, it means No. It means refusal. It was a performance where many must have clapped or might have cried, and that’s what his magic is.

Piku

And here comes Bhashkor Banarjee with one fixed problem, Constipation. Again, a Srujit Circar film and, again, the beauty of its kind. A relationship between a young working daughter and an aging father, all put together with humour and emotions. And, all of it is so natural that we can see a relationship with our parents building up in the conversations of Piku and Bhashkor.

Aarakshan

Prabhakar Anand, aka Dr Anand, the principal of STM College, fights to abide by the OBC reservation verdict of the Supreme Court. Overcoming many challenges on this path made another stunning performance by Amitabh and was the earliest of this decade.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Amitabh Bachchan was recently seen in Goodbye, co-starring Rashmika Mandanna and Neena Gupta. Next, he will be seen in Uunchai, which will hit the theatres on November 11 this year.
