Alia Bhatt’s Inspiring Journey from Heartbreak Over Inshallah to Success in Gangubai Kathiawadi with Sanjay Leela Bhansali

The country has celebrated Alia Bhatt and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, Gangubai Kathiawadi, a monumental success, but not without traversing hilly roads during their journey together. It is, of course, the project that brought them together, Inshallah, starring Alia Bhatt alongside Salman Khan. That movie being shelved caught her completely off guard. Bhansali was recently interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter India. He spoke candidly about the emotional state Alia was left in after Inshallah was dropped. He claimed that she was “shattered”. She locked herself in her room and cried and became frustrated because of the unfulfilled movie.

But Alia’s career was set on a new path within seven days when Bhansali offered her a role which she will never forget. It was the gang leader Gangubai in his upcoming film, Gangubai Kathiawadi. Although initially unwilling to play the role, Alia eventually found her ground under the gurukul of Bhansali. As filmmaker Sandeep Srivastava recalls the transformation Alia underwent from getting lost to turning out to be a part of Bhansali’s creation, “From LA, where I was supposed to play the character in Inshallah, I suddenly found myself in Kamathipura. I didn’t know if I could do it,” admitted Alia.

As the shoot progressed, Alia not only overcomes all of those doubts but imbibes in the character to the extent that she even slips into Gangubai’s persona into casual conversations sometime. Bhansali comments on the profundity in which Alia has connected with the character, remarking that it has become second nature to her now. The two stars are looking forward to reuniting for an ambitious new project titled Love and War, which promises to bring together star-cast stars Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal slated to hit the theatres March 2026.
