Ali Abbas Zafar: and his team presented inflated costs and did not deliver accurate financial records
Ali Abbas Zafar: A court in Mumbai has instructed the police to open a case against director Ali Abbas Zafar and his associates, Himanshu Mehra and Ekesh Randive, after a complaint was filed by producer Vashu Bhagnani. The accusations pertain to cheating, criminal conspiracy, and forgery related to the making of the 2024 film ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’.
Court instructions
Magistrate Komalsing Rajput, who gave the order, emphasized the seriousness of the claims, remarking, “The charges are severe.” All the factors suggest that a detailed interrogation appears essential. The court directed the Bandra police to probe the three individuals under multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code, such as 120(b) (criminal conspiracy), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), and 465 (forgery).

Complaint by Vashu
Vashu Bhagnani, Bollywood producer, stated that he was deceived into shelling out significant amounts under the guise of production expenses, with Zafar and his partners reportedly violating contract terms and presenting exaggerated costs. The producer claimed they were falsifying documents, altering accounts, and diverting large amounts of money. Bhagnani claimed that although a production budget of ₹125 crore was settled, Zafar and his team presented inflated costs and did not deliver accurate financial records, thereby cheating him.
The complaint states that Bhagnani entered into an agreement in February 2021 for four movies with Bollywood icon Akshay Kumar, which includes ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’. In November 2021, Zafar was appointed as the film’s director, on the stipulation that his partners, Mehra and Randive, would handle the finances and production.
Legal action to be taken
The court observed that Bhagnani’s claims were supported by considerable evidence, such as contracts, payment receipts, expense documents, and WhatsApp conversations. The overall sum of purported fraud and dishonesty in the various transactions is exceedingly large. “The volume of transactions is also quite substantial,” the magistrate reported.
