Unveiling Abhishek Bachchan’s Odyssey: Navigating Industry Hurdles to Stardom

In a candid revelation, Abhishek Bachchan delved into the challenges he faced while venturing into Bollywood during the early 2000s. Speaking at the Hindi Actors Roundtable on Galatta Plus, Abhishek Bachchan opened up about the hurdles he encountered despite being Amitabh Bachchan’s son, shedding light on the struggles that preceded his entry into the film industry.

During the roundtable discussion, Abhishek Bachchan shared the paradoxical situation he found himself in. Despite the buzz and anticipation generated by film magazines proclaiming his imminent debut, filmmakers were hesitant to cast him. The son of Bollywood’s legendary Amitabh Bachchan found himself grappling with a stark reality – the industry seemed uninterested in taking on the responsibility of launching him.

Industry Excitement, Director Declines: Abhishek Bachchan’s Struggle

Reflecting on that challenging period, Abhishek Bachchan recalled meeting various directors who respectfully declined to work with him. The excitement that surrounded his entry into the industry seemed to be in stark contrast to the reception he received from filmmakers. In his own words, “There was a lot of chatter, excitement about me joining (the film industry). Not because of me, but because of the kid I was. But contrary to that, people were not interested in working with me.”

Abhishek  Bachchan then recounted the fascinating turn of events that led to his debut in Bollywood. Initially involved in developing a period film titled “Samjhauta Express” with ad filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Abhishek Bachchan faced rejection when the script was presented to his father, Amitabh Bachchan, for production under his banner ABCL. Amitabh dismissed the script as “bakwas” (meaning rubbish).

In a heartening twist, Amitabh took Abhishek to the Filmfare Awards, where filmmaker JP Dutta, who had recently won the Best Film award for “Border,” spotted him. A couple of days later, JP approached Abhishek Bachchan for a project on a Mughal descendant, the son of Bahadur Shah Zafar. Although that specific film didn’t materialize, it marked the beginning of Abhishek  Bachchan’s journey in Bollywood. Eventually, JP Dutta cast Abhishek Bachchan in his 2000 cross-border romance “Refugee,” alongside fellow newcomer Kareena Kapoor.

The anecdote also revealed an interesting subplot involving Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. After hearing from Amitabh that the script of “Samjhauta Express” was not up to par, Rakeysh, in a fit of determination, went home, consumed a bottle of alcohol, and, in Abhishek Bachchan’s words, “revenge-wrote” the script of “Aks.” This film, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, turned out to be his directorial debut and featured none other than Amitabh Bachchan himself.
