What is Down Syndrome? Let us break the stereotype
People worldwide are changing their mindsets and visions about people with Down syndrome. This awareness is possible only when people get to know more and minutely about Down syndrome. It is a chromosomal disorder caused by an error or maybe just changed in cell division that results in the presence of an additional copy of chromosome 21 (trisomy 21) or additional chromosomal 21 material.
The instinct of just noticing the odd in us brainwashes our mind to accept the abnormalities. People with Down Syndrome not just face struggles in the professional field but also emotionally. This is one minority who has not dwelled with their rights with equity.
Are we ready to accept people with Down Syndrome?
Every year World Syndrome Day is celebrated on March 21. Recently, a campaign was held on the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day in Delhi. There were several issues raised at the campaign demanding certain reforms from the government and the fellow citizens as well. The campaign was witnessed mostly by parents and social workers. Dr. Surekha Ramachandran, President, Down Syndrome Federation of India was a key speaker who raised points for equal opportunities for people with Down syndrome. She also had several issues with the procedure in parenting the children with Down Syndrome. This campaign was to guide parents for physio and sensory issues in their children and what kind of parenting they need.

Conclusion
Perception for people with Down Syndrome is changing but the stigma is still there. They are getting into talk shows like Ted, swimming across the English Channel, winning Olympics medals, graduating from the renowned universities. This change across the globe is possible only with the ardent desires of both society and parents. People are helping children with DS on both global and local levels, we find people creating awareness in order to accept them.
