World Peace and Understanding Day: Celebrating Rotary’s Commitment to Global Peace
World Peace and Understanding Day: Building Bridges for a Peaceful Future
World Peace and Understanding Day is celebrated annually on February 23. This day serves as a memorial for the initial assembly of Rotary that took place. This gathering of entrepreneurs, designed to create an environment where their histories were irrelevant, initiated the series of events that resulted in the establishment of Rotary International. An international group focused on humanitarian efforts alongside promoting peace and good will globally, Rotary International started in Chicago, U.S. The date of its inaugural meeting has since turned into World Understanding and Peace Day, celebrated during World Understanding Month in February.
Background of World Peace and Understanding Day
World Peace and Understanding Day celebrates the inaugural meeting that resulted in the establishment of Rotary International. Lawyer Paul P. Harris convened a gathering of his professional associates in Chicago. He sought to establish a fellowship of entrepreneurs free from the interference of politics and religion. At first, the Rotary members gathered in one another’s offices until the organization expanded to a size that required its own venue. The Rotary Clubs were subsequently founded in four additional American cities, and ultimately, the organization expanded globally, resulting in a name change from Rotary Club to the International Association of Rotary Clubs. Over time, the name was altered once more to Rotary International.
The organization has collaborated with the U.N. since the establishment of the United Nations Organization. Rotary International is an organization dedicated to service that unites business people and professionals to provide humanitarian aid and strive for global goodwill and peace. It encompasses six key areas of philanthropic emphasis- disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development, and peace and conflict prevention.
In line with its dedication to peace, Rotary International has established Rotary Centers for International Studies focused on peace and conflict resolution at eight universities globally. Rotary fellowships provide funding to pursue studies at these Centers too. The organization also offers a Rotary Peace and Conflict Resolution Program, a graduate-level initiative that selects 75 scholars annually.
