Promoting kindness, inclusion, and equality
Traditionally observed on the second Wednesday of April the International Day of Pink will fall on a . this year. The day was established as part of a campaign to stop bullying of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and to continue the fight for acceptance diversity and equality. The goal of the day is to promote diversity and inclusivity in the world. People everywhere are urged to wear pink on this day to show support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and to protest bullying. According to the community, wearing pink on the International Day of Pink symbolizes inclusivity, diversity, equality, bravery and acceptance.
Background of International Day of Pink
Day of Pink began in 2007 when two straight high school students Travis Price and David Shepherd saw a gay student at Central Kings Rural High School in Nova Scotia Canada being harassed because he was wearing a pink polo shirt. They made the decision to act and went to a local bargain store to purchase fifty pink shirts including tank tops to wear to school the following day. They invited their classmates to join the fight against homophobic bullying by sharing the news with them online. The following day hundreds of students in pink attire arrived.
Jers Vision (now the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity) conceived the International Day of Pink. The purpose of the International Day of Pink in April is to express solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in their ongoing struggle for acceptance and equality even though it is similar to Pink Shirt Day in February which aims to ban all forms of bullying. By encouraging young people to question social norms, demand more from their teachers and speak out against bullying of 2SLGBTQIA+ people the day aims to create a more diverse and inclusive world.
Discrimination still exists in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and can be based on age sexual orientation gender race or disability. As the first step toward changing society and eliminating these social barriers the International Day of Pink is observed. On this day wearing pink is thought to symbolize kindness solidarity diversity equality acceptance bravery and inclusivity. The message of building a more diverse and inclusive world will be disseminated with the assistance and participation of those outside the community. The 2SLGBTQIA+ community will hopefully no longer face discrimination.
