Indira Gandhi birth anniversary: India’s former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was born on November 19 in the year 1917 in UP’s Allahabad, now known as Prayagraj. She was born to India’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and Kamla Nehru. She was the first lady Prime Minister of India who served as PM for three terms, a period accounting to 16 years. She was the second-longest-serving Prime Minister of the country after her father, who became Prime Minister after India got independence from Britain.

Indira Gandhi is also is known as Iron lady took many decisions which changed the course of India’s history during her term. Some of the decisions which made a big impact in the country include abolishing the privy purses of the princely states in the country and nationalization of the banks.

Indira Gandhi was killed by her own bodyguard at her residence

Iron Lady’s reign was however cut short when she was killed by her own bodyguard at her own residence Akbar Road, Delhi on October 31, 1984.

The assassination was planned after “Operation Bluestar” was commenced by Indira Gandhi. Operation Bluestar led the Indian Army to storm into Golden Temple of Amritsar, a holy Shrine for Sikhs to neutralize Sikh separatists who had sought refuge there.

Since the birth of Indira Gandhi, India Nehru’s life was steeped in politics. Her father, Jawaharlal Nehru was a leader in India’s fight for Independence from British rule, so it was natural for Indira to become a supporter of this struggle. She witnessed a bonfire of foreign good at a young age and at the age of 5 years, she chose to burn her own beloved doll, because that doll was made in England.

No, Indira didn’t get her title from Mahatma Gandhi

We all know about the friendship between Indira’s father and Mahatma Gandhi. But Indira got the same last name as the Iconic leader wasn’t due to a connection with the Mahatma but because she was married to Feroze Gandhi (who wasn’t related to the father of the nation). Despite Feroze and Indira being in love, India didn’t support her wedding. Feroze Gandhi was a Parsi, while Indira Gandhi was a Hindu and that was a time when mixed marriages were unusual.

She was found of electoral malpractice in June 1975. Rivals started advocating for her removal as Prime Minister, she opted to declare emergency in the country. This was the time when people called this a black moment in India’s democracy.
