Background of McDonald’s Day

Richard and Maurice McDonald, from New Hampshire, opened the first MacDonald’s restaurant in San Bernardino on May 15, 1940. The business was a quick success, with the McDonald brothers first offering slow-cooked barbecue for the first time. It was only after three months of operation that they realized that hamburgers made 80% of their sales. Afterward, they transformed it into a restaurant for self-service, where customers could order from the windows.

The McDonald’s brothers created the “Speedee Service System,” which enables them to prepare the food in under 30 minutes. Ketchup, mustard and onions plus two pickles on every one of their hamburgers. Although the McDonald’s business was initially difficult, it started to thrive after the brothers made the switch from potato chips to french fries and triple thick milkshakes. In the early 1950s, their profits doubled. Afterwards, they founded multiple franchises in California and Arizona.’ Ray Kroc, a milkshake mixer dealer, visited them in 1954 and inquired why McDonald’s had ordered eight of his multimixers.

The knowledge Kroc had about McDonald’s restaurant industry made him see potential in it. He obtained the license to operate a franchise for the brothers’ restaurant throughout the nation. The year 1955 marked the opening of his first McDonald’s franchised restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois. The disagreement over how to run the business was a result of differing philosophies. In 1961, Kroc took ownership of the company from the McDonald brothers. Those brothers who were the originators of the business idea and named them after themselves gradually faded from public view. The original San Bernardino restaurant was maintained by them until their demise.
