Engineering Student From Nepal Takes Her Life At Odisha University, Classmates Claim She Was ‘Harassed’

Student Found Dead in KIIT Hostel

A student reportedly took her own life in the dormitory of a private engineering college in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The B.Tech student in her third year, identified as Prakriti Lamsal from Nepal, was enrolled at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT).

Protests Erupt Following Tragic Incident

Protests erupted at KIIT after the 20-year-old engineering student was discovered dead in her hostel room on Sunday night. Students from Nepal demonstrated against the university administration, demanding answers regarding the circumstances leading to her death.

Investigation and Arrest of Fellow Student

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Preliminary reports suggest that Prakriti Lamsal took her own life. A fellow student from the same university has been arrested in connection with the case. The police are currently interrogating him, and an FIR has been registered under laws related to abetment of suicide.

Police and University Response

A police unit arrived at the hostel, and the body was sent for an autopsy at Capital Hospital before being handed over to the family. Meanwhile, KIIT registrar Jnyana Ranjan Mohanty stated that the student’s decision might have been influenced by a strained personal relationship.

Students’ Allegations Against University Officials

Several students from Nepal blocked roads near the KIIT campus, alleging that university officials did not take action when the deceased student reached out to the International Relations Office, reporting harassment by a classmate.

University Declares “Sine Die” for Nepalese Students

Following the incident, the university declared “sine die” for all Nepalese students and ordered them to vacate the campus immediately on Monday. More than 500 Nepalese students were transported to different railway stations to return home.

Campus Situation Returns to Normal

The university stated that concerns arose among Nepalese students after the incident, leading to discussions with the administration. Following these discussions, the students have returned home, and the campus has returned to normalcy. Meanwhile, police investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
