Comedian Kunal Kamra Summoned by Mumbai Police Over Eknath Shinde Joke

The Mumbai Khar Police Station issued an appearance notice to comedian Kunal Kamra for questioning about his recent stand-up remarks scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday March 25 2025.

During his performance Kamra created a parody song which labeled Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor). During his ‘Naya Bharat’ show at Mumbai’s Habitat Comedy Club Kamra performed the sketch which later appeared across his social media.

Supporters of Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction destroyed the Habitat Comedy Club during their Sunday night rampage. The police arrested more than ten individuals with Shiv Sena youth leader Rahool Kanal among them for their involvement in the incident.

Kamra faces a police investigation for possibly criticizing public figures through his show along with promoting dangerous public statements. The initial FIR appeared at MIDC police station but Khar police acquired responsibility for conducting additional investigation.

Through his defense Kamra maintained that freedom of speech extends beyond adulation of powerful people and wealthy figures. No matter how poorly you take humor aimed at a prominent public figure it does not modify the fundamental nature of my rights, he further said.
