The West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, paid her final tributes on X( previously Twitter) shortly after the tragic news of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s death. In her tweet, Banerjee stated that Bhattacharjee spent his final years at home due to illness.

Shocked and grieved by Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the former chief minister, passing away unexpectedly. I’ve known him for a few decades now, and in the past few years, I’ve been to his house a few times while he was sick and essentially bedridden.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s Political Journey:

In 2000, Bhattacharjee, a veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), succeeded Jyoti Basu as the chief minister of West Bengal. After the Left Front ruled the state for 34 years, Bhattacharya lost the 2011 assembly elections to the Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee. During his term, Mamata Banerjee, the current chief minister, led rallies against land acquisition for industries.

Bhattacharya left the CPI(M) in 2015, leaving both the politburo and the central committee. He also left the party’s state secretariat in 2018.

He mostly stayed away from public events in the past several years and resided in his little, two-room government apartment on Palm Avenue in south Kolkata.

In contrast to his party’s anti-capitalist posture, Bhattacharjee’s commercial policies were rather liberal. He started industrialization campaigns as West Bengal’s CPI(M) chief minister in an effort to draw in investors and boost employment in the region.

Bhattacharjee is renowned for bringing in significant initiatives, such as the state’s much-discussed Tata Nano automobile project. The project’s goal was to create the least expensive car in the world, and Singur was selected as the site for its manufacturing facility.
