This will mark the fourth occasion that Delhi will have a Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP has not yet revealed its Chief Minister candidate for Delhi, securing victory in the Delhi Election 2025 after the vote counting concluded on Saturday.
The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly, an increase from the eight seats it obtained in the 2020 Delhi Assembly Election. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured 22 seats, marking a substantial decrease from the 62 it achieved in 2020. In the meantime, the Congress share of seats stayed unchanged at zero.
Delhi CM from BJP Wins for the fourth time
The BJP may declare its candidate for Chief Minister in Delhi at any moment. The party regained power in Delhi after over 26 years.
The BJP initially gained control in the national capital in 1993 when it secured 49 seats in the assembly during the Delhi elections. Since that time, the BJP has had a total of three Chief Ministers.
In 2025, it will mark the fourth occasion that the Chief Minister of Delhi is from the BJP.
The former three Chief Ministers from the BJP in Delhi include Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj. None of them finished the entire five-year term in office.
Madan Lal Khurana: Between 1993 and 1996
The 1993 elections took place following the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, which contributed to weakening the Congress performance in that year.
Khurana became the initial Chief Minister of Delhi following the re-establishment of the state Legislative Assembly via the 69th Constitution Amendment Act, 1991. His term extended for two years and 86 days, from December 2, 1993, to February 26, 1996.
Well-known as ‘Delhi ka Sher’ (Lion of Delhi), Khurana’s tenure concluded after his involvement in the notorious Hawala scandal in 1994. Subsequently, political pressure increased on him, resulting in his resignation from the CM position in 1996.
Sahib Singh Verma: Between 1996 and 1998
Khurana’s departure cleared the path for Sahib Singh Verma to assume the role of the second BJP Chief Minister.
BJP’s Sahib Singh Verma is the parent of BJP leader Parvesh Verma, who triumphed over AAP’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal in the 2025 Delhi Elections for the New Delhi assembly seat. Sahib Singh’s term spanned 2 years and 228 days — from February 26, 1996, to October 12, 1998.
Sahib had to step down after encountering criticism regarding the exceptionally high onion prices and his purported inability to address the water crisis in Delhi.
Sushma Swaraj: Between 1998 to December 1998
Next in line was Sushma Swaraj, the first female Chief Minister of Delhi. BJP presented a new candidate, anticipating that it would assist the party in combating anti-incumbency in the Union Territory.
Throughout her 52-day term, Swaraj established a committee to re-establish the supply of onions to aid in reducing the prices. She Allegedly organized vans for the distribution of onions throughout Delhi. However, this might assist the BJP in regaining power.
