April 12: International Day to Advocate for Street Children’s Rights

Raising awareness and demanding equal rights for millions of homeless children.

Together, we can help provide shelter, education, and dignity to every child

The International Day for Street Children is observed annually on April 12 around the world. This day was established in order to give homeless children a voice. This was done to ensure that their rights would not be disregarded. Human rights organizations have the chance to raise awareness of the predicament of street children worldwide on this day. Rehabilitating and placing street children in loving homes is possible with the combined efforts of governments, human rights organizations and individuals. In addition to finding them safe homes the goal is to provide them with medical care education and skills that will help them earn a better living.

Background of International Day for Street Children

An agreement on the rights of children was held by the UN in 1989. According to the conventions, every child worldwide should have the following rights: equal opportunities, clean water and electricity, healthcare and nutrition, a stable loving and nurturing environment and the freedom and dignity to live.

These rights are denied to homeless children. For example the Consortium for Street Children (C.S.C.) are working to implement the Four Steps to Equality in order to lessen the risks that encounter children living on the streets. Making a commitment to equality safeguarding all children granting access to services and developing innovative solutions are some of these actions.

Up to 150 million kids worldwide are homeless according to recent statistics.

Some kids live on the streets with their families while others spend most of their time there begging for food and cash before going home at night. Some kids are homeless because they have no family or place to go back to. Naturally a lot of fundamental human rights are denied to these kids.

The reasons why kids wind up on the streets are numerous. Living in an environment that has been impacted by war and conflict is one of the most frequent causes. In these cases the children are either dead or living apart from their relatives. When family members abuse them some kids choose to leave the house. Other causes could be being pushed into criminal activity experiencing health problems or being rejected by their family. In any event street children are frequently denied access to healthcare education and the chance to lead respectable lives.
