The establishment of Rashtrapati Bhavan itself is connected to the beginnings of the Mughal Garden at Rashtrapati Bhavan, currently referred to as Amrit Udyan. Rashtrapati Bhavan, an embodiment of imperial magnificence in the early 20th century, was crafted by the famous British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. 

Lady Hardinge, spouse of the then-Viceroy Charles Hardinge, played a key role in this objective by assisting in the creation of a garden befitting the splendor of the residence. Lutyens meticulously crafted the design, taking cues from European formal gardens and Mughal gardening traditions. The 15-acre garden, completed in 1929, displayed India’s exceptional horticulture and offered the President of India a verdant escape. 

Development of Mughal Garden at Rashtrapati Bhavan

• Central Lawn- The Central Lawn, a large green area, is located at the heart of Amrit Udyan. This vibrant region often hosts official gatherings, such as receptions held by the president of India. Along with providing a serene setting, the lush greenery signifies the room’s splendor and spaciousness. It is a favored location for visitors to appreciate and photographers to capture images of, as it is meticulously preserved to maintain its renowned charm throughout the entire year. 
• Water Channels- The water channels, a hallmark of Amrit Udyan, were influenced by the classic Mughal charbagh styles. The terrain is intersected by these waterways, creating an enchanting interplay of water and light.
