Jaya Verma Sinha’s Historic Appointment as Railway Board’s First Female CEO and Chairperson in its 118-year-old History!
The Central Government has appointed Jaya Verma Sinha as the first woman Chairperson of the Railway Board, the supreme decision-making body for the Ministry of Railways. In the 118-year history of the Board, Ms. Jaya is the first woman to hold the position of chairperson. In 1905, the Railway Board was established.

She served as the Member (Operations and Business Development) prior to taking office on or after September 1. She took the lead in managing the fallout from the horrific Balasore tragedy, which resulted in 291 Deaths.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Jaya Verma Sinha, Indian Railway Management Services (IRMS), Member (Operations & Business Development), Railway Board to the post of Chairman & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Railway Board,” said an order.
Ms Sinha will succeed Anil Kumar Lahoti and assume charge on September 1 at the earliest. Her tenure will end on August 31, 2024. Ms Sinha is scheduled to retire on October 1 but will be re-employed on the same day for the remainder of her tenure.

Jaya Sinha is an Alumnus of Allahabad University.
In 1986, Ms. Sinha began working with the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), where she was assigned to the Northern Railway, South Eastern Railway, and Eastern Railway zones.
She was also the High Commission of India’s Railway Advisor in Dhaka, Bangladesh, for four years. She was important in the launch of the Maitree Express, a train service that runs between Kolkata and Dhaka. She also held the position of Divisional Railway Manager for the Sealdah Division of the Eastern Railway.
