Centre brings ‘digital news broadcasters’ under broadcast bill but doesn’t define them clearly: In the updated draft of the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2023, the central government has expanded regulatory control to include OTT platforms and developers of digital media content. “Digital news broadcasters” are people and organizations who create and post textual, audio, or video content about current events or news online. These people and organizations fall under the draft bill’s jurisdiction.
The proposed legislation has increased required registration, tightened content controls, and increased compliance requirements, thereby strengthening government control over “digital news broadcasters” and over-the-top (OTT) platforms. But there’s disagreement on what constitutes “digital news broadcasters.”

Hamas names Yahya Sinwar, mastermind of the Oct. 7 attacks, as its new leader in a show of defiance: After his predecessor was murdered in an apparent Israeli strike in Iran on Tuesday, Hamas designated Yahya Sinwar, its top official in Gaza and the mastermind of the attacks in Israel on October 7, as its new head. This appointment is a spectacular demonstration of the strength of the hardline side of the Palestinian militant group.
After ten months of devastation from Israel’s campaign in Gaza and the assassination of Sinwar’s predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, the group is ready to continue fighting, as evidenced by the choice of Sinwar, a reclusive figure close to Iran who spent years bolstering Hamas’ military might. It is also sure to enrage Israel, which, following the strike on October 7, has placed him at the top of its list of targets to be killed.
