Congress To Submit No Confidence Motion Against Modi Government: What Does it Mean?


The ongoing crisis in Manipur has been the central demand of the Opposition as they seek a discussion on it with the ruling Modi government. In an effort to bring the focus on this topic, the Opposition parties alliance I.N.D.I.A. has decided to introduce a no-confidence motion against the ruling government. However, the likelihood of them succeeding is very low as they do not have the numbers to get the motion approved.

What is the No Confidence Motion?

  • Motion of No Confidence, a Vote of No Confidence can be introduced only in the Lok Sabha under rule 198 
  • The motion is admitted when it gets the support of 50 members 
  • It has to be submitted to the Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha by 10 AM on the day the motion is proposed to be moved 
  • It is a tool against the Council of Ministers (COM) that shows that the current government does not have the confidence of the people
  • It needs to be passed by 51% of the members of the house
  • If passed Government is deemed to have lost the majority and has to resign from office
  • The No Confidence Motion is also used by the Opposition to get the Government to discuss any important issues
