Uttarakhand Faces Severe Flood Crisis: 14 Dead, Over 2,200 Evacuated as Rescue Operations Intensify Amid Landslides and Rising River Levels

Currently, Uttarakhand is in a fix due to several adverse weather conditions with the incessant downpour causing severe destruction in the state. From the latest data by SDRF spokesperson, more than 2,200 passengers traveling in Kedarnath have been rescued successfully. This comprises of 451 people who were rescued from Munkatiya area to Sonprayag during difficult night time crossing. However, these efforts have not paid off and the Kedarnath Yatra continues to remain closed due to fatal unit conditions which are responsible for frequent landslides on tracks like Ghoraparav, Lincholi, Badi Lincholi, and Bhimbali.

Due to such occasionally occurred harsh climate, an advice has been made to Kedarnath Yatries those are already in Rudraprayag. They are told that they can wait for further notifications in better weather and road conditions. The Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers in Rudraprayag district are almost close its danger mark, making it a very sensitive situation.

It is a known fact that the rainfall has led to increased deaths and cases of injuries. According to reports, the number of people killed has risen to 14, and 10 others that have been affected in different ways by rains. Recently, four people including two brothers were found dead in a canal in Dehradun while another man was found dead in a river. Likewise, there has been loss of lives in Haridwar wherein a house collapse at Bharpur village has taken four lives while 10 others were injured out of which 8 are said to be very critical. Two more deaths happened in Roorkee bus stand, because of electrocution. Among cloudburst disasters, Tehri family lost three members due to a landslide tragedy where the house was buried completely, and one woman was killed when debris from the hill caved on her house in Chamoli.

The ongoing crisis has also contributed to several lost persons reports. Currently in Khoda, Ghaziabad, four of five youths who had visited Kedarnath are still missing. Also, there is no recovery yet of a seven-year old child from Haldwani in Nainital district who drowned in a flooded drain. Rescue efforts are underway at full speed, with the police and the State Disaster Response Force actively looking for the people who are missing.

In reaction to the worsening situation, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has instructed officials to remain alert. He pointed out the large-scale rescue operations that took place during the night and assessed the situation at the State Emergency Operations Centre. The Indian Air Force has sent Chinook and Mi-17V5 helicopters to help with the relief efforts in Kedarnath, working together with state authorities to provide important assistance.
