“Uttarakhand Avalanche: 47 Rescued, 8 Trapped; PM Modi Assesses Rescue Efforts”
On February 28th 2025 Border Roads Organisation (BRO) workers faced an avalanche at their camp near Mana village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district while performing road construction activities and remained trapped with their team members.
Rescue teams from the Indian Army along with ITBP and NDRF members executed their mission in severe weather conditions. Rescue teams achieved the extraction of 47 employees before time but ongoing operations aim to recover all eight workers present below the snow depth.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains vigilantly tracking updates about this situation through conversations with state leader Pushkar Singh Dhami to gain details about rescue actions. During their phone call the Prime Minister demonstrated full backing for rescue operations and instructed provision of every essential support to initiate the rescue mission.

During his visit Chief Minister Dhami assessed the operations by air from above before monitoring the state’s coordination efforts at the Disaster Control Room. The rescue execution faces substantial difficulties from adverse weather patterns brought by heavy snowfalls and the known danger of additional avalanches. The rescue teams continue working diligently to reach the trapped workers in spite of current safety obstacles. The current operations receive helicopter support from aircraft deployed by the state. Gauchar contains the closest functioning airstrip for this purpose.
Himalayan infrastructure development proves risky for the region because of its natural disaster-prone environment that includes snow avalanches and flash floods. Past accidents across the state emphasize why the region needs complete safety protocols and preparedness standards to prevent such incidents. Local emergency teams present a dual objective to both save remaining miners while delivering suitable medical care to all casualties.
